How far apart are the lines on wide and college ruled paper?
These are the common US conventions for ruled paper. The presets use exactly these sizes:
| Ruling | Spacing | In mm | Lines per page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wide ruled | 11/32 in | 8.7 mm | 29 |
| College ruled | 9/32 in | 7.1 mm | 35 |
| Narrow ruled | 1/4 in | 6.4 mm | 40 |
| A4 ruled | 0.315 in | 8 mm | 33 (on A4) |
Lines per page: US Letter portrait with 0.5 in margins (A4 row: 12.7 mm margins). The margin line is drawn 1¼ in from the left edge, as on common school paper. Sizes from the Ruled paper source below; our tests check the PDF line spacing by measuring a rendered page.
What options does the lined paper generator have?
- Rulings: college ruled, wide ruled, narrow, A4 ruled, two handwriting row heights, or any custom spacing.
- Handwriting rows: solid top line, dashed midline and solid baseline in each row, useful for practising letter height.
- Layout: US Letter or A4, portrait or landscape, margins you choose, an optional left margin line and an optional name and date line.
- Colour and weight: grey, light grey, blue, green or black lines in four weights. The margin line is a soft red.
Is there lined paper for kindergarten?
Young writers often use larger rows. Try the handwriting preset with 3/4 in rows, or wide ruled paper. What size your school expects varies, so follow your teacher’s instructions.
How do I print the PDF at the right size?
Open the PDF and choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Do not choose “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”, which rescales the paper and changes the square size. In Adobe Acrobat and Reader this is under Page Sizing & Handling; in Chrome and Edge set Scale to Default (100%); in Safari and Firefox set the scale to 100%. Pick the same paper size in the printer settings as in the generator (US Letter or A4).
To check, measure a few squares with a ruler: 10 squares of 1/4 in should be 2½ in, and 10 squares of 5 mm should be 50 mm. Home printers cannot print right to the page edge, which is why the generator keeps a margin (0.5 in or 10 mm by default).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between wide ruled and college ruled paper?
Wide ruled (also called legal ruled) has lines 11/32 in (8.7 mm) apart and suits larger handwriting, for example in grade school. College ruled (medium ruled) has 9/32 in (7.1 mm) spacing, so more lines fit on the page. Narrow ruled is 1/4 in (6.4 mm).
Can I print lined paper as a PDF on A4?
Yes. Switch the paper size to A4 and choose the A4 ruled preset (8 mm line height) or enter your own spacing. The PDF page is exactly 210 × 297 mm.
What is the vertical line on the left?
It is the margin line. On wide and college ruled paper it is drawn about 1¼ in (32 mm) from the left edge. You can switch it off.
Is there lined paper with a dotted line in the middle for handwriting?
Yes. The handwriting presets draw each row with a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline, with a gap between rows. Choose 1/2 in or 3/4 in row height.
Can I add a name and date line?
Yes. Tick “Name and date line at the top” and the PDF gets a Name: and Date: line above the first ruled line.
Why are my printed lines not the right distance apart?
The print dialog was probably set to “Fit to page”. Print at Actual size (100%). Then ten wide-ruled lines should measure about 3.44 in (87 mm).
