How does the dot grid generator work?
Dots are placed at the corners of an invisible square grid. The number of gaps is the usable width (or height) divided by the spacing, rounded down, and the dots sit at both ends of every gap. Leftover space is split evenly, so the dots are centred on the sheet. Each dot is a true circle in the PDF, not a picture.
- Spacing presets: 1/4 in, 5 mm, 4 mm and 3 mm, plus any custom spacing.
- Dot size: 0.4, 0.6 or 0.9 mm across.
- Colour: grey, blue, green, black (light grey is drawn in the normal grey so dots stay visible).
- Layout: US Letter or A4, portrait or landscape, margins you choose, an optional binding margin and an optional name and date line.
Dot grid, graph paper or lined paper?
Dot grid keeps a regular guide but draws less on the page than lines, so it suits sketching, lettering, notes and planning. Choose graph paper when you want full squares to count, or lined paper for writing in rows. For drawing in 3D style, see isometric paper, which also has a dot version.
How do I print the PDF at the right size?
Open the PDF and choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Do not choose “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”, which rescales the paper and changes the square size. In Adobe Acrobat and Reader this is under Page Sizing & Handling; in Chrome and Edge set Scale to Default (100%); in Safari and Firefox set the scale to 100%. Pick the same paper size in the printer settings as in the generator (US Letter or A4).
To check, measure a few squares with a ruler: 10 squares of 1/4 in should be 2½ in, and 10 squares of 5 mm should be 50 mm. Home printers cannot print right to the page edge, which is why the generator keeps a margin (0.5 in or 10 mm by default).
Frequently asked questions
What is dot grid paper?
It is paper with a grid of small dots instead of lines. The dots guide handwriting, sketching and layouts without the visual weight of full grid lines.
What dot spacing should I choose?
5 mm is a common choice, and 1/4 in is the usual choice in inches. Use 3 mm or 4 mm for small notes and diagrams, or type any spacing from 1.5 mm to 60 mm.
How big are the dots?
You can choose small (0.4 mm), medium (0.6 mm) or large (0.9 mm) across. Use small or medium for a subtle guide and large if your printer lightens fine detail.
Can I make dot grid paper for a bullet journal or planner?
Yes. Tick “Binding margin” to add an extra 1/2 in on the left for a hole punch or binder, and choose A4, Letter or landscape to match your notebook or planner pages.
Can I print dot grid paper in A4?
Yes. Switch the paper size to A4 and choose 5 mm or any other spacing. The PDF page is exactly 210 × 297 mm.
Why do my dots look uneven or too faint?
Make sure the print dialog is set to Actual size (100%), choose a darker colour or the large dot size, and turn off any “toner save” or draft mode.
